About Pure Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood comes from heartwood, the dense inner wood at the centre of the tree, and the tree has to be mature before there's anything worth distilling. That single fact explains most of what's unusual about sandalwood: the long wait, the price, and the regulation that surrounds it.

The scent is soft rather than sharp. It's warm, creamy and milky-sweet with a dry woody base, and it holds on skin and in fabric for hours after lighter oils have faded. Perfumers use it as a fixative for exactly that reason, and it has a long history in meditation and temple use across South Asia.

Species matters more here than with any other oil. Santalum album, Indian sandalwood, is the classic and the most prized. It's also a protected species: wild harvesting in India is tightly controlled, and most legitimate Santalum album oil on the world market now comes from managed plantations, including large ones in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Australian sandalwood, Santalum spicatum, is a separate native species with a drier, slightly nuttier scent. Several unrelated woods, such as amyris, are also sold as sandalwood and smell noticeably different.

Because genuine sandalwood is expensive, oil sold at accessible prices is very often blended into a carrier. That's a normal way to buy it and makes a costly oil practical to use, as long as the label says so.

How To Use Pure Sandalwood Essential Oil

  • Diffuser: 2 to 4 drops per 100 ml of water. Sandalwood is a base note and builds slowly, so give it 20 minutes before deciding to add more. It sits beautifully under rose, jasmine or bergamot.
  • Meditation and yoga: a drop of diluted oil on the inside of each wrist, or a drop on a tissue nearby. Don't apply it neat.
  • Natural perfume: sandalwood is one of the great base notes and a natural fixative, which means it makes the lighter oils above it last longer. Try it under rose, jasmine, bergamot or ylang ylang.
  • Facial oil: 1 to 2 drops in 30 ml of jojoba or rosehip oil, a 0.5 to 1% dilution. Patch test first.
  • Body and massage oil: 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil, a 1 to 2% dilution.
  • Bath: stir 3 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or full-cream milk first, then add it to the water.
  • Blending: rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, bergamot, frankincense, vetiver, patchouli, geranium and lavender.
