About Pure Rose Essential Oil

Rose is the most expensive flower in perfumery, and the reason is arithmetic. It takes thousands of hand-picked blossoms to produce a few millilitres of oil, the flowers have to be picked before the morning sun burns off the aromatics, and the harvest window is a few weeks a year. Bulgaria and Turkey grow most of the world's crop.

Two forms exist and they smell different. Rose otto is steam distilled and reads brighter, cleaner and slightly spicy. Rose absolute is solvent extracted, deeper and closer to the smell of the living flower. Because of the cost, most rose oil sold at consumer prices is pre-diluted in jojoba or another carrier, which is a normal and useful way to buy it. A dilution is easier to use and far less wasteful than a neat oil you'd only ever use a drop of.

The scent is layered. There's sweetness at the front, a green leafy note underneath, and a warm, almost honeyed depth that stays on skin long after lighter florals have gone.

How To Use Pure Rose Essential Oil

  • Facial oil: 1 to 2 drops in 30 ml of jojoba, rosehip or argan oil. Rose is a classic evening facial oil note and pairs beautifully with frankincense.
  • Diffuser: 2 to 3 drops per 100 ml of water. Rose is rich, so fewer drops than you'd use of a citrus oil.
  • Natural perfume: rose sits in the heart of a blend. Try it with bergamot on top and sandalwood, cedarwood or patchouli underneath.
  • Bath: stir 3 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or full-cream milk first, then add that to the water.
  • Body oil: 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil, which is a 1 to 2% dilution.
  • Blending: rose works with frankincense, sandalwood, bergamot, geranium, jasmine, patchouli and Roman chamomile.

How to Use Pure Rose Essential Oil Safely

  1. For external use only. Do not swallow.
  2. Dilute before skin contact. Use 0.5 to 1% on the face, which is 1 to 2 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil, and 1 to 2% on the body.
  3. Patch test first. Apply a little of the diluted oil to your inner forearm or behind an ear and check after 24 hours.
  4. Keep it away from the eyes and broken skin. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice.
  5. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare professional before using it.
  6. Don't use it on children under 2. Halve the adult dilution for older children after checking with a doctor or pharmacist.
  7. Essential oils are flammable. Keep the bottle away from open flames and heat.
  8. Ask your vet before diffusing around pets, and leave them a way out of the room.
  9. Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, out of reach of children.

Many Australians also add a few drops to their diffuser for a floral, uplifting atmosphere at home.

Can rose essential oil help with anti-ageing?

Rose essential oil is valued for its antioxidant-rich profile, which many people use as part of an anti-ageing skincare routine. When diluted with a carrier oil like jojoba or rosehip, it can be applied to skin to support a more youthful-looking complexion. Always dilute before topical use and perform a patch test first.

How do you use rose essential oil for skin in Australia?

Mix 2–3 drops of rose essential oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil, then apply gently to cleansed skin. It can be used on the face, neck, and décolletage as part of a daily skincare ritual. For aromatherapy, add 4–5 drops to a diffuser to fill your space with its beautiful floral scent.

Is rose essential oil safe for sensitive skin?

Rose essential oil is considered one of the gentler essential oils and is often well-tolerated by sensitive skin when properly diluted with a carrier oil. However, it is always recommended to do a patch test on a small area of skin before full application. Avoid contact with eyes and keep away from children.

What is rose essential oil good for?

Pure Rose Essential Oil is one of the most treasured oils in aromatherapy and natural skincare. It is widely used to support emotional wellbeing, ease feelings of stress, and create an uplifting, romantic atmosphere when diffused. Diluted in a carrier oil, it is deeply nourishing for the skin and is popular for its ability to support a more even, radiant complexion.
