Pure Patchouli Essential Oil
Dark, earthy and faintly sweet, patchouli is the most divisive scent we stock and the one people are most loyal to. It's steam distilled from fermented Pogostemon cablin leaves grown in Indonesia. Perfumers use it as a fixative, which means it makes everything blended with it last longer. External use only; dilute before applying to skin.

About Pure Patchouli Essential Oil
Patchouli is made differently from almost every other oil on this site. The leaves aren't distilled fresh. They're dried, then lightly fermented, and only then put through the still. That fermentation is where the deep, earthy, slightly boozy character comes from. Fresh patchouli leaves smell green and ordinary; it's the process that makes the oil.
It's also one of the few oils that genuinely improves with age. Most essential oils are at their best in the first year or two and decline from there. Patchouli does the opposite: the rough edges soften and the sweetness comes forward, which is why aged patchouli is prized in perfumery and why old bottles are worth keeping rather than replacing.
In a blend, patchouli is a fixative. It's a heavy base note that slows the evaporation of everything above it, so a citrus or floral blend that would fade in an hour holds for several. That is its main job in commercial perfume, where it has been a backbone ingredient for decades, long before and long after its association with the 1960s.
The oil is dark amber and noticeably thicker than most. A little goes a long way.

How To Use Pure Patchouli Essential Oil
- Diffuser: 2 to 3 drops per 100 ml of water. Patchouli is strong and lingers, so fewer drops than you'd use of a citrus. It softens beautifully with sweet orange or bergamot.
- Natural perfume: one of the great base notes. Two drops of patchouli under four of bergamot and two of rose gives a blend that lasts most of a day on skin.
- Body oil: 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil, a 1 to 2% dilution.
- Roll-on blend: patchouli suits a roll-on better than most oils because the scent develops on skin over an hour rather than announcing itself at once.
- Soap and candle making: it holds its scent through heat better than almost anything else and is a staple of earthy, unisex blends.
- Bath: stir 3 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil first, then add that to the water.
- Wardrobes and linen: a few drops on a cotton pad tucked in a drawer, kept off the fabric itself.
- Blending: sweet orange, bergamot, lavender, rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, sandalwood, vetiver, cedarwood and clary sage.

How to Use Pure Patchouli Essential Oil Safely
- For external use only. Do not swallow.
- Dilute before skin contact, at 1 to 2%, which is 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil.
- Patch test first. Apply a small amount of the diluted oil to your inner forearm and check after 24 hours.
- Patchouli is one of the gentler oils on skin, but gentler is not the same as safe neat, so dilute it like any other.
- The oil is dark and will stain light fabric and pale surfaces. Let a blend absorb before dressing.
- Keep it away from the eyes and inner ears. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice.
- Patchouli is sedating for some people in large amounts. Go lightly in a diffuser until you know how it affects you.
- If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare professional before using it.
- Don't use it on children under 2, and halve the adult dilution for older children after checking with a doctor or pharmacist.
- Ask your vet before diffusing around pets, and leave them a way out of the room.
- Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, out of reach of children.
