Pure Neem Seed Oil

The neem tree grows across the Indian subcontinent and has been part of daily life there for a very long time. The seeds are pressed for their oil, which comes out thick, cloudy and dark yellow to brown, and it sets almost solid in a cold room. 

The scent needs saying plainly, because it surprises people who order it expecting something pleasant. Neem smells strong, nutty and sulphurous, closest to garlic or peanuts left too long. It does not smell like a beauty product. That's normal for cold pressed neem and it isn't a sign of a bad batch. Most people use it blended into something lighter and more fragrant rather than on its own. 

Like jojoba and castor, neem is a carrier oil rather than an essential oil, so it doesn't need diluting the way lavender or clove does. In practice, though, most people do dilute it with coconut, jojoba or sweet almond oil, partly to thin it out and partly to soften the smell. 

One thing to be clear about. Neem is widely known as a garden product, and we're often asked about it. We sell this as a cosmetic carrier oil for hair and skin blends. We don't sell it for use on plants and it isn't registered for that. In Australia, any product sold or promoted for controlling pests or diseases on plants needs registration with the APVMA, which we don't hold. If you want to treat plants, buy a registered garden product and follow its label.

• Hair and scalp blend: neem is thick and strongly scented, so most people use it at 10 to 25% of a blend. One part neem to three or four parts coconut, jojoba or sweet almond oil works well. Massage into the scalp, leave 30 minutes, then shampoo out. It usually takes two washes. 
• Body blend: same ratio, blended into a lighter carrier. 
• Soap making: neem is a traditional soap oil and the smell fades considerably through the saponification process, which makes soap one of the better uses for it. 
• Adding fragrance: a few drops of lavender, rosemary or tea tree in the blend goes a long way towards covering the scent. 
• Getting it out of the bottle: neem thickens and can solidify below about 20 degrees. Stand the closed bottle in warm water for a few minutes before use. 
• Patch test before the first use. Neem is a strong oil and not everyone's skin agrees with it.

1. For external use only. Do not swallow. Swallowing neem oil is dangerous, particularly for babies and young children, and has caused serious illness. Keep the bottle up high and out of sight. 
2. If any is swallowed, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 straight away, or 000 in an emergency. 
3. Do not use neem oil if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. Neem has a long-documented traditional use as a contraceptive and abortifacient, and it is not an oil to take chances with. 
4. Don't use it on babies or young children. 
5. Patch test before your first use, on the inner forearm, and wait 24 hours. Neem irritates some people's skin even though it is a carrier oil. 
6. Keep it away from the eyes. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it away with a soft dry cloth and rinse gently if needed. 
7. When you blend essential oils into it, follow that oil's own dilution guidance. 
8. The oil is dark and thick and will stain light fabric and towels. 
9. Ask your vet before using neem around pets, and never apply it to an animal. 
10. Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, out of reach of children.
