Pure Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense, also sold as olibanum, is distilled from hardened resin tapped from Boswellia trees. The scent is warm and resinous with a faint citrus lift, and it's one of the oldest traded aromatics in the world. Widely used in diffusers, meditation practice and facial oil blends. External use only; dilute with a carrier oil before applying to skin.

Buy 100% Pure Frankincense Olibanum Essential Oil

Frankincense doesn't come from a flower, a leaf or a peel. It comes from resin. Growers cut the bark of Boswellia trees, the tree seeps a milky sap to seal the wound, and the sap hardens into pale lumps called tears over a few weeks. Those tears are collected and steam distilled into oil.

The scent follows from that. It's warm, dry and resinous, a little like incense smoke without the smoke, with a faint citrus brightness on top. People who expect something sweet or floral are usually surprised by how clean it smells.

Frankincense has been traded for thousands of years and still carries strong associations with ritual, incense and meditation. That's why it shows up so often in quiet-room diffuser blends and in facial oils, where its thick, resinous character pairs well with lighter florals.

Ours is 100% pure oil in an amber glass bottle, which slows the oxidation that light causes. Nothing is added and nothing is diluted.

How To Use Pure Frankincense Essential Oil

Diffuser: Three to four drops per 100 ml of water. Frankincense is a base note, so it comes through slowly and lingers. Many people blend it with lemon or orange to lift it, or with lavender and cedarwood for something quieter.

Facial oil: Add 1 to 3 drops to 30 ml of jojoba, rosehip or argan oil. That's about a 0.5 to 1% dilution, which suits face skin. Patch test first, then use it at night.

Body and massage oil: Six to twelve drops per 30 ml of carrier oil, a 1 to 2% dilution.

Meditation and yoga: One drop of diluted oil on the inside of each wrist, or a drop on a tissue nearby. Don't apply it neat.

Blending: It works with sweet orange, bergamot, lemon, lavender, cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli and rose.

How to Use Pure Frankincense Essential Oil Safely

  1. For external use only. Do not swallow frankincense oil, and don't add it to food or drink.
  2. Dilute before skin contact. Use 0.5 to 1% on the face and 1 to 2% on the body.
  3. Patch test first. Put a little of the diluted oil on your inner forearm and check after 24 hours.
  4. Keep it away from the eyes and inner ears. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice.
  5. Diffuse in a room with airflow, in sessions of 15 to 30 minutes.
  6. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare professional before using it.
  7. Don't use it on children under 2. For older children, halve the adult dilution and ask a doctor or pharmacist first.
  8. Ask your vet before diffusing around pets, and always leave them a way out of the room.
  9. Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, out of reach of children.
