About Pure Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus needs less introduction here than anywhere else in the world. The trees grow across the country, the scent is in the air after rain, and most Australian households have had a bottle of it in the laundry cupboard for generations.

The oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus globulus, the blue gum. Its main component is cineole, sometimes called eucalyptol, and that compound is what makes the scent so sharp and cooling. Different eucalyptus species give oils with different cineole levels, which is why not all eucalyptus oil smells the same.

This is our biggest bottle at 40 ml, because eucalyptus gets used up faster than most oils. It goes into laundry, cleaning water, steam bowls and diffusers rather than just a drop at a time.

Benefits & Uses

The real benefits of eucalyptus oil will keep you buying it every time. In fact, use eucalyptus oil for cleaning to naturally disinfect surfaces and eliminate odors. This also makes eucalyptus oil a popular choice in aromatherapy, where its use in a diffuser may help to clear the mind and support respiratory health. The Purebionaturals Eucalyptus Oil Company guarantees that our eucalyptus essential oil is safe for all of your wellness needs. More than that, the eucalyptus oil bug repellent offers a natural alternative to chemical-laden products, while eucalyptus oil for skin soothes minor irritations and rejuvenates your complexion.

How To Use Pure Eucalyptus Essential Oil

  • Diffuser: 4 to 5 drops per 100 ml of water. The scent is strong and travels quickly, so start low.
  • Steam bowl: 1 to 2 drops in a bowl of hot, not boiling, water. Keep your eyes shut and your face far enough away to be comfortable. Not for children.
  • Shower steamer: a few drops on the shower floor away from the direct stream. The heat lifts the scent as you wash.
  • Laundry: 3 to 5 drops in the rinse cycle or on a wool dryer ball leaves a clean scent on towels and linen. It's the traditional Australian use, and it's the one most people know.
  • Cleaning water: 10 drops in a bucket of warm water for floors and benches, or 10 drops in 100 ml of water with a teaspoon of vodka or witch hazel as a scented surface spray. Shake before use, since oil and water separate. It's a scent, not a disinfectant, so use a registered disinfectant where that matters.
  • Massage blend: 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil, a 1 to 2% dilution. It pairs well with peppermint or rosemary after exercise.
  • Blending: eucalyptus works with peppermint, rosemary, lemon, tea tree, lavender and cedarwood.

How to Use Pure Eucalyptus Essential Oil Safely

Eucalyptus oil deserves more care than most oils on this site, particularly around children. Swallowing even a small amount can be serious, and it is one of the more common causes of essential oil poisoning in Australian households.

  1. For external use only. Do not swallow it.
  2. Store it up high, capped tightly and out of sight of children. If a child swallows any amount, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 straight away, or 000 in an emergency.
  3. Never apply it to the face, nose or chest of a baby or young child. Cineole can cause breathing difficulty in small children.
  4. Don't use it on children under 2 at all. For older children, keep the concentration low, keep it away from the face, and ask a doctor or pharmacist first.
  5. Dilute before skin contact, at 1 to 2%, which is 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil. Patch test on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours.
  6. Keep it away from the eyes and broken skin. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice.
  7. If you have asthma or another respiratory condition, speak to your doctor first. A strong scent can trigger symptoms in some people.
  8. Diffuse in a room with airflow, in sessions of 15 to 30 minutes rather than continuously.
  9. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare professional before using it.
  10. Eucalyptus is toxic to cats and dogs. Don't apply it to a pet, keep it out of their reach, and ask your vet before diffusing it in a home with animals.
  11. Store tightly capped, away from heat and open flames.

Frequently Asked Question

What is eucalyptus essential oil used for in Australia?

Eucalyptus essential oil is a beloved Australian botanical, well known for its clean, camphoraceous aroma. It is widely used to support respiratory wellness when diffused during colder months, to ease muscle tension when blended into a massage oil, and to create a refreshing, spa-like atmosphere at home. It's also popular in DIY natural cleaning products.

Can eucalyptus oil help with blocked noses and congestion?

Eucalyptus essential oil is commonly used as a natural approach to supporting clear breathing. Add 4–6 drops to a diffuser in your living space or place a few drops in a bowl of steaming water, lean over it with a towel draped over your head, and breathe slowly for a few minutes. Always keep eyes closed during steam inhalation.

How do you use eucalyptus oil in a diffuser?

Add 5–10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to a water-filled diffuser and allow it to run for 30–60 minutes in a well-ventilated room. This is a safe and effective way to enjoy its aromatic benefits throughout your home. Avoid prolonged diffusion in enclosed spaces, and use caution around pets, infants, and young children.

Is eucalyptus essential oil safe for use at home in Australia?

Eucalyptus essential oil is safe for home use when used as directed and properly diluted for topical applications. It should never be ingested or applied undiluted to skin. Eucalyptus is not suitable for use around infants, young children, or cats without professional guidance. For external use only - always store safely out of reach of children.

Is eucalyptus oil safe to breathe in?

Yes - diffusing eucalyptus oil in a well-ventilated room is safe for most adults. Keep diffuser sessions to 30–60 minutes and ensure the space can be aired. Eucalyptus oil is not recommended for direct inhalation from the bottle for extended periods, and caution should be used around very young children, infants, and people with asthma or respiratory conditions. Consult a healthcare provider if you have concerns.
