Pure Clove Essential Oil

Warm, sweet and peppery, clove is the scent of mulled wine and Christmas baking. Ours is steam distilled from Indonesian clove buds. It's a strong oil that goes a long way in a diffuser, and it's a favourite for winter soap and candle making. External use only; clove needs a lower dilution than most oils, so read the safety notes first.

About Pure Clove Essential Oil

Cloves are flower buds. They're picked from the clove tree before they open, dried until they turn the familiar dark brown, and that's the spice in your cupboard. The oil is steam distilled from those same buds, which is why it smells so immediately recognisable.

The scent is warm and sweet with real pepper behind it, and a slightly medicinal edge that anyone who's been to a dentist will half recognise. In a blend it reads as festive, especially alongside sweet orange and cinnamon.

The compound doing most of the work is eugenol, which makes up the bulk of clove bud oil. It's also why clove needs more care than almost any other oil in the range. Clove belongs with cinnamon bark, oregano and thyme in the group that can burn skin at concentrations other oils handle comfortably.

Clove leaf and clove stem oils also exist and are cheaper and harsher. Ours is clove bud, the finest of the three.

Benefits & Uses

One of the key benefits of clove essential oils is their ability to fight bacteria and fungi, making them particularly useful for household cleaning and mold removal. People often search for clove oil to kill mold, as it is a natural and effective alternative to chemical cleaners. Whether you're dealing with mildew in your bathroom or mold in damp areas, clove oil mold treatments are gaining popularity for their natural effectiveness. If you’re wondering where to buy oil of cloves for mould, look no further.

Additionally, many Australians prefer to purchase clove oil due to its versatile properties and aromatic benefits. Clove bud oil is a popular choice for its rich, warm fragrance, making it ideal for use in diffusers or for topical applications. If you're seeking a high-quality natural oil, our store offers easy access to premium-quality clove essential oil, ensuring a product that is pure and effective for your aromatherapy and wellness needs.

How To Use Pure Clove Essential Oil

  • Diffuser: 1 to 2 drops per 100 ml of water. Clove is one of the most powerful scents in the range and a heavy hand makes a room unpleasant. Two drops of sweet orange to one of clove is a good winter blend.
  • Soap and candle making: clove holds its scent through heat and is a staple of autumn and winter blends with orange, cinnamon and vanilla.
  • Simmer pot: a drop or two in a pan of water with orange peel and a cinnamon stick scents a whole house.
  • Body oil: 0.5% at most, which is 3 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil. This is the lowest dilution we recommend for any oil we sell, and it isn't cautious for the sake of it.
  • Not for facial use, and not for broken skin.
  • Blending: sweet orange, cinnamon bark, vanilla, bergamot, ylang ylang, cedarwood and patchouli.

How to Use Pure Clove Essential Oil Safely

Clove is the strongest oil in our range and needs the lowest dilution. Please read this before your first use.

  1. For external use only. Do not swallow. Swallowing clove oil can cause serious harm, and the risk is greatest for children.
  2. Keep the bottle up high and out of sight of children. If any is swallowed, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 straight away, or 000 in an emergency.
  3. Never apply it neat. Dilute to a maximum of 0.5%, which is about 3 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil. Neat clove oil can cause chemical burns.
  4. Patch test every new blend on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours.
  5. Don't use it on the face, on broken or irritated skin, or in the mouth.
  6. Keep it away from the eyes and inner ears. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice.
  7. Diffuse in short sessions of 15 minutes in a room with airflow. One or two drops is enough.
  8. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your healthcare professional has said otherwise.
  9. If you have a bleeding disorder, liver problems, or take blood-thinning medication, speak to your doctor before using clove oil.
  10. Don't use it on children under 12.
  11. Clove is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it away from pets and ask your vet before diffusing where animals spend time.
  12. Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, away from heat and open flames.

Frequently Asked Question

What is clove essential oil used for?

Clove essential oil is used in Australia for its warm, spicy, and stimulating aroma. It is diffused as part of cosy, warming aromatherapy blends, incorporated into natural dental care routines, and used in DIY antimicrobial home sprays. Its rich, familiar scent is associated with warmth, comfort, and invigoration.

Can clove oil be used for toothache relief?

Clove essential oil has a long history of use for temporary toothache relief due to its natural analgesic properties. Dilute 1 drop in a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply sparingly to the affected area with a cotton ball for temporary comfort. However, clove oil is very potent and can cause irritation if overused. It is not a substitute for professional dental care - please consult a dentist for persistent pain.

Where can I buy clove oil in Australia?

If you're wondering where I can buy clove oil, the answer is right here. You can order it directly from our store. While clove-oil woolworths are an option, our product offers superior quality, making it an ideal choice for both household and personal care applications.

Is clove essential oil safe to use at home?

Clove essential oil is safe for home use when handled with care and properly diluted. It is a particularly strong and potentially sensitising oil, so it should always be heavily diluted (no more than 0.5% for skin application) and is best kept for diffuser use or very targeted topical application. Avoid use on children and sensitive skin areas. For external use only.

How do you use clove essential oil in aromatherapy?

Add 2–3 drops of clove essential oil to a diffuser with warm water. It blends beautifully with sweet orange, cinnamon, and vanilla for a warming, festive home fragrance. Because of its potency, use sparingly and always in a well-ventilated space. Limit diffusion sessions to 30–45 minutes, and avoid using spaces occupied by pets or very young children.
