Pure Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary sage smells like the sage in your kitchen. It's warm and nutty with a soft floral, almost wine-like edge, which is why perfumers reach for it so often. Ours is steam distilled from Bulgarian-grown Salvia sclarea flowering tops. External use only; dilute before skin contact and avoid it during pregnancy unless your doctor or midwife says otherwise.

About Pure Clary Sage Essential Oil

The first thing worth clearing up is the name. Clary sage, Salvia sclarea, is a different plant from common sage, Salvia officinalis, the herb in your roast dinner. Common sage oil is sharp and camphor-like and carries real safety concerns. Clary sage is softer, warmer and nuttier, with a floral note underneath that some people describe as wine-like. The two are not interchangeable.

It grows as a tall biennial with pale lilac bracts, and most of the world's commercial crop comes from Bulgaria, France and Russia. Ours is Bulgarian, steam distilled from the flowering tops.

In perfumery, clary sage is a workhorse. It sits in the middle of a blend and adds a rounded, slightly sweet warmth that stops floral and citrus scents from feeling thin. It also has a long history of wine making and flavouring, which is where the muscatel comparison comes from.

Benefits & Uses

Some of Clary Sage  major advantages include its well-known aromatherapy applications. This sage essential oil will help reduce your stress, lessen anxiety, and provide relaxation. People also use Clary Sage during pregnancy because it helps to maintain a tranquil environment. Many women also use clary sage oil during labor due to its ability to aid during childbirth. Whether you want to relax or support yourself through pregnancy, this clary sage aromatherapy oil is versatile and natural. Please consult your Dr before use of this oil during pregnancy and brestfeeding.

How To Use Pure Clary Sage Essential Oil

  • Diffuser: 3 to 4 drops per 100 ml of water. It's a good evening scent and blends well with lavender, bergamot or Roman chamomile.
  • Massage and body oil: 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of jojoba or sweet almond oil, a 1 to 2% dilution.
  • Bath: stir 3 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil before adding it to the water, so it disperses rather than floating.
  • Natural perfume: clary sage is a classic middle note. Pair it with bergamot on top and cedarwood or vetiver underneath.
  • Blending: it works with lavender, bergamot, geranium, Roman chamomile, cedarwood, sandalwood, jasmine and citrus oils.

How to Use Pure Clary Sage Essential Oil Safely

  1. For external use only. Do not swallow.
  2. Avoid clary sage during pregnancy unless your doctor or midwife has specifically advised otherwise. It is widely listed among the oils to avoid pregnancy, and any use around birth is a decision for your healthcare team, not something to try on your own.
  3. Dilute before skin contact, at 1 to 2%, which is 6 to 12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil, or 2 to 3 drops per teaspoon.
  4. Patch test first. Apply a small amount of diluted oil to your inner forearm and check after 24 hours.
  5. Clary sage can be relaxing to the point of drowsiness for some people. Don't use it before driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
  6. Don't combine it with alcohol. Some people report the two together to increase drowsiness.
  7. If you take any medication, particularly blood pressure, mood, or sleep, or you have a hormone-sensitive condition, speak to your doctor before using it.
  8. Keep it away from the eyes and inner ears. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice.
  9. Diffuse in a room with airflow, in sessions of 15 to 30 minutes.
  10. Don't use it on children under 2 and halve the adult dilution for older children after checking with a doctor or pharmacist.
  11. Ask your vet before diffusing around pets and leave them a way out of the room.
  12. Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, out of reach of children.
