Pure Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
Warm, sweet and unmistakably spicy, cinnamon bark is the scent of Christmas baking and mulled wine. Ours is steam distilled from Sri Lankan Cinnamomum verum, true Ceylon cinnamon. It is also the strongest oil in our range by some margin, and it needs a lighter hand than anything else we sell. Best kept for the diffuser. External use only; read the safety section before any skin use.

About Pure Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of a small evergreen tree. Harvesters strip the bark, which curls into quills as it dries, and those quills are the sticks in your cupboard. The oil is steam distilled from the same bark.
Two distinctions matter here, and most sellers blur them.
Bark versus leaf. Both parts of the tree are distilled, and they give different oils. Bark oil is rich in cinnamaldehyde, which is the warm, sweet, instantly recognisable cinnamon smell. Leaf oil is rich in eugenol and smells closer to clove, and it's considerably cheaper. This is bark oil.
Ceylon versus cassia. Cinnamomum verum, also written Cinnamomum zeylanicum, is true or Ceylon cinnamon, from Sri Lanka. It is sweeter and more delicate. Cinnamomum cassia is a different species, harsher and cheaper, and it's what most supermarket cinnamon actually is. Ours is Ceylon.
Now the important part. Cinnamaldehyde is what makes this oil smell wonderful and it is also what makes it hazardous. Cinnamon bark is one of the most potent skin sensitisers in aromatherapy, and international fragrance guidelines set a leave-on skin limit below 0.1%, which is far lower than any other oil we sell. Undiluted cinnamon bark can cause chemical burns. Treat this as a diffuser and crafting oil first, and a skin oil only with real care.

How To Use Pure Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil
- Diffuser: 1 drop per 100 ml of water, and only 1. Cinnamon bark is the most powerful scent we stock and two drops in a small room is genuinely too much. One drop of cinnamon with three of sweet orange is the classic festive blend.
- Simmer pot: a single drop in a pan of water with orange peel and a cinnamon stick scents a whole house.
- Soap and candle making: cinnamon bark holds its scent beautifully through heat and is a staple of autumn and winter blends with orange, clove and vanilla. Follow your supplier's usage rates for skin-contact products such as soap.
- Potpourri and pine cones: a drop or two on dried botanicals.
- Skin: we would generally say don't. If you do use it in a body blend, the limit is under 0.1%, which is well under 1 drop per 30 ml of carrier oil, and getting that right means blending it into an existing mix rather than counting drops. There are better oils for skin.
- Not on the face, not in the bath, and not in a warm compress. Cinnamon bark floating on water concentrates against skin and can burn.
- Blending: sweet orange, clove, vanilla, cedarwood, patchouli, frankincense and ginger.

How to Use Pure Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil Safely
Cinnamon bark is the most hazardous oil in our range. Please read this section in full before your first use.
- For external use only. Do not swallow. Cinnamon bark oil is not the same thing as ground cinnamon and must never be used in food or drink.
- Keep the bottle up high and out of sight of children. If any is swallowed, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 straight away, or 000 in an emergency.
- Never apply it neat. Undiluted cinnamon bark oil can cause chemical burns and blistering within minutes.
- For leave-on skin products, the accepted maximum is under 0.1%, far lower than any other oil we sell. In practice this means cinnamon bark is not a suitable oil for home massage or body blends, and we would steer you to sweet orange, clove or ginger for a warm scent on skin.
- Do not use it on the face, in the bath, or in a warm compress. Oil floating on water concentrates against skin.
- Patch test any blend containing it, on the inner forearm, and wait 24 hours.
- Keep it away from the eyes and inner ears. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice. Water spreads oil rather than removing it.
- Diffuse in short sessions of 15 minutes in a room with airflow, using one drop.
- Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- If you have a bleeding disorder, diabetes, liver problems, or take blood-thinning or blood sugar medication, speak to your doctor before using cinnamon bark oil.
- Don't use it on children at all.
- Cinnamon is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it away from pets and ask your vet before diffusing where animals spend time.
- Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, away from heat and open flames.
