Pure Cedarwood Essential Oil

Warm, dry and woody, cedarwood is the scent of a timber workshop or an old wardrobe. Ours is steam distilled from Himalayan cedar, Cedrus deodara. It's a base note, so it anchors lighter oils like bergamot and lavender and makes a blend last longer. Popular in beard oils, scalp oils and men's fragrance. External use only; dilute before applying to skin.

About Pure Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood is a base note. In perfumery that means it sits underneath the brighter oils and holds a blend together, so a citrus scent that would normally fade in an hour hangs around for several. It's one of the reasons cedarwood turns up in so many men's fragrances, beard oils and room sprays.

The scent is dry and woody with a slightly sweet, balsamic edge. Most people recognise it immediately, usually from cedar chests, pencil shavings or a joinery workshop.

A note on names: several unrelated trees are sold as cedarwood oil, and they smell different. Atlas cedarwood is sharper. Virginian cedarwood, which is actually a juniper, is softer and sweeter. Ours comes from Cedrus deodara, the Himalayan cedar, which sits between the two: warm and woody with more body than Virginian. It's steam distilled from the wood and bottled as 100% pure oil.

Benefits & Uses

  • Promotes Relaxation: Frequently used in diffusers and massage blends to promote a calming atmosphere.
  • Skin-Enhancing Properties: Helps balance and tone the skin, making it ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Natural Insect Repellent: Acts as an effective natural insect repellent, great for individuals who spend time outdoors.
  • Supports Restful Sleep: Its calming aroma makes it useful in sleep blend formulas to ensure a restful night's sleep.

How To Use Pure Cedarwood Essential Oil

  • Diffuser: 4 to 6 drops per 100 ml of water. Cedarwood is heavier than citrus oils and takes a little longer to fill a room, but the scent stays put once it's there.
  • Beard and scalp oil: 3 to 6 drops per 30 ml of jojoba or argan oil, which is a 1 to 2% dilution. Cedarwood is a common note in beard oils because the scent reads as woody rather than floral.
  • Blending: pair it with bergamot, lavender, rosemary, patchouli, vetiver or ylang ylang. As a base note, one or two drops is usually enough alongside three or four drops of a lighter oil.
  • Wardrobes and drawers: put a few drops on a cotton pad or a piece of untreated timber and tuck it among clothes. Keep it off the fabric, since undiluted oil stains.
  • Outdoor room spray: 10 drops in 100 ml of water with a teaspoon of vodka or witch hazel to help it disperse. Shake before each use, because oil and water separate.
  • Candles and soap: cedarwood holds its scent through the heat of soap making better than most citrus oils.

How to Use Pure Cedarwood Essential Oil Safely

  1. For external use only. Do not swallow.
  2. Dilute with a carrier oil before skin contact, at 2 to 3 drops per teaspoon (5 ml) for a body blend.
  3. Patch test first. Apply a small amount of the diluted oil to your inner forearm and wait 24 hours.
  4. Keep it away from the eyes, inner ears and broken skin. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, then seek medical advice.
  5. Diffuse in sessions of 15 to 30 minutes in a room with airflow, rather than running a diffuser all day.
  6. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare professional first.
  7. Don't use it on children under 2, and halve the adult dilution for older children.
  8. Ask your vet before diffusing around cats, dogs or other pets, and always leave them a way out of the room.
  9. Store tightly capped somewhere cool and dark, away from heat and open flames, out of reach of children.
