About Pure Bergamot Essential Oil
Bergamot is a small, sour citrus fruit, and most of the world's crop grows in southern Italy. Nobody eats it fresh. The value is in the peel, which is pressed to release an oil that smells somewhere between lemon and sweet orange, with a light floral finish. If you've had Earl Grey tea, you already know the scent.
Our bergamot essential oil is cold pressed from Italian fruit and bottled as 100% pure oil, with no fillers or synthetic fragrance. Perfumers use bergamot as a top note because it opens a blend with a clean, bright lift before the heavier notes come through. At home, it's commonly used in diffusers, natural perfume oils, soap and candle making, and as a light citrus note in shampoo.
Benefits & Uses
How To Use Pure Bergamot Essential Oil
- In a diffuser: add 3 to 5 drops per 100 ml of water. The fresh citrus scent suits a kitchen or home office, and plenty of people run it first thing in the morning.
- In blends: bergamot works well with lavender, cedarwood, ylang ylang and jasmine. Two drops each of bergamot and lavender makes a softer blend for the evening.
- On skin: always dilute. Mix 1 drop into 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of jojoba or another carrier oil, and apply in the evening or to skin that will stay covered. Cold pressed bergamot can react with sunlight, so treated skin should stay out of the sun for 12 hours.
- In the bath: stir 3 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil before adding it to warm water, so the oil disperses instead of floating on top. An evening bath is the better time for it.
- In hair care: add 1 to 2 drops to a palmful of shampoo. Because shampoo rinses off, this is one of the simpler ways to enjoy the scent.
- In soap, candles and perfume: citrus top notes fade faster than woody ones, so bergamot is usually paired with a base note such as cedarwood, patchouli or vetiver to make the scent last.

How to Use Pure Bergamot Essential Oil Safely
- For external use only. Do not swallow.
- Always dilute with a carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond or coconut before it touches your skin.
- Patch test first. Apply a small amount of the diluted oil to your inner arm and wait 24 hours before using it more widely.
- Avoid sun and solariums on treated skin for 12 hours. Cold pressed bergamot contains bergapten, a natural compound that can cause redness, burning or dark patches when skin is exposed to UV light.
- Keep away from the eyes, inner ears and other sensitive areas. If oil gets in an eye, wipe it with a carrier oil or full-cream milk rather than water, since water spreads oil instead of removing it, then seek medical advice.
- Stop using it if you notice redness, itching or discomfort.
- If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or have a medical condition, check with your healthcare professional before use.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets. Some essential oils are unsafe around cats and dogs, so ask your vet before diffusing near animals.
- Store tightly capped in a cool, dark place, away from heat and open flames.

Frequently Asked Question
What is bergamot essential oil used for?
Bergamot essential oil is popular in Australia for its fresh, citrusy, and slightly floral aroma. It is widely used in aromatherapy to uplift mood, ease feelings of stress and anxiety, and promote a positive emotional state. It's also a popular choice for skincare when diluted properly, and is the distinctive flavour and aroma behind Earl Grey tea.
Can bergamot oil help with stress and anxiety?
Bergamot essential oil is one of the most widely used oils in aromatherapy for stress and emotional support. Diffusing it at home or in the office creates an uplifting, mood-brightening atmosphere. You can also dilute it in a carrier oil and apply to the wrists or neck for a portable, on-the-go calming effect throughout the day.
Is bergamot essential oil safe to use on skin in Australia?
Bergamot essential oil must always be diluted in a carrier oil before skin application. Importantly, bergamot is phototoxic - it can cause skin sensitivity and burning when exposed to UV sunlight after application. Always avoid direct sunlight or UV exposure for at least 12 hours after applying bergamot to skin. Use a steam-distilled or bergapten-free version for safer topical use.
How do you use bergamot essential oil in a diffuser?
Add 4–6 drops of bergamot essential oil to your diffuser with water. It blends well with lavender, frankincense, and ylang ylang for a balanced, uplifting blend. Diffuse in your home, office, or wellness space for 30–60 minute sessions. The bright citrus aroma is particularly popular in the morning for an energising start to the day.
Is bergamot essential oil safe for daily use?
Bergamot is safe to diffuse daily in a well-ventilated room. For topical use, always dilute well and avoid sun-exposed skin areas, as bergamot (like all citrus oils) can cause photosensitivity. If you use it in a skincare routine, apply it to areas covered by clothing or use it in the evening. For external use only.
